Synsepalum dulcificum Miracle Fruit- A truly miraculous plant. Everything about it is unusual-its looks, its flowering, and the taste of its fruit (berries). A West African shrub that is slow growing with great looking dark green foliage the year round. Clusters of small white flowers occur in branch axils. Red berries are produced over an extended period that make sour things taste sweet. Chewing a small portion of the pulp of a single berry can change the taste of beer to apple juice, of lime to sweet lemonade, of grapefruit to orange, etc. Taste change lasts up to two hours. Has been used to treat cancer patients following chemotherapy to improve food taste and as natural sweetening agent in place of sugar. Chemical proteins from the crushed berry coat the sour receptors on the tongue so everything tastes sweet. Unbelievable, has to be tried to be believed. Prefers 30 to 50% shade. Blooms from May through November and has fruit from June through December in Zone 9. In Zones 10 and higher plant is ever bearing. Slow growing (5 year old plant, only 3 feet tall), make it ideal for container culture; a 10 year old plant is only 4 to 5 feet tall. Very heavy fruit producer; 6 foot plant produces as many as 300 berries at one time.
