The basal inflorescences are tall and spread at the top like a torch. Young inflorescences are eaten in some Asian countries. This plant has attractive foliage and stems because of the maroon coloring of the stem and underside of leaves. Needs two years growth in a warm climate before blooming. The plant grows 6’ to 20’ in full sun. The inflorescence is glossy red with red flowers that have yellow margins.
